Climate
Historic harbour in the west of the Peloponnes, Monemvassia, one of the main sights in the lakes, in both summer and winter. It comprises a massive monolith, jutting out of the sea (300 m). On the other side, with views of the Mirtoo (West Aegean) sea, hidden from the mainland and protected by a thick wall, is one of the most typical medieval towns in Greece, with only one entrance, Moni Emvasis. It is birthplace of the famous left poet, Jiannis Ritsos, who called Monnemvassia "Greece's Gibraltar". It can be reached by land from Gefira (bridge), a narrow piece of land which can be passed in 15 minutes. Monemvassia can only be reached along the south coast route, which is not easy to access the lower part, the "Kastro" (stronghold) and from there to the older, more predominantly medieval stronghold on the rocky massif. The Basilica Aiya Sofia is situated inland.
