Travel Guide Creta/Chania
Further information on the country Greece
Climate
The most beautiful town on Crete, situated on the north coast of the island, 140 km west of Heraklion. Built on the ancient ruins of Kidonia, Chania has lived through numerous invasions but also many cultures whose influence is still visible today in the house facades, castles, walls, antiques, monasteries and churches. There are 2 routes to Chania: via the airport near Akrotiri and the Suda harbour. The municipal market in the town centre overlooks the whole town. Not far from the centre is the municipal park with a small zoo (local animals). Next door is the "Irini and Filia" park (peace and friendship). The Venetian harbour, very picturesque at any time of the day or year, is particularly popular with both locals and tourists, one of the reasons being the wide selection of entertainment on offer. The nearby stretch of coastline harbours long beaches.
