Climate
Situated between both Porto and Lisbon and the Douro and Tage, Beiras is a region of great contrast, with lots of different leisure activities to take part in; skiing in the Torre de Planalto Central region, fishing, adventure and water sports on the beaches and rivers. Interesting towns to visit here are: Aveiro, also known as “Ven se du Portugal” because of its canals, Coimbra, a picturesque university town with its medieval streets, Fatima, place of pilgrimage where they celebrate yearly the apparition of the Virgin Mary, the monastery of Batalha and the Cistercian convent at Alcobaca, and the castles at Leiria Ourem, Pomba and Porto, dating from the middle ages. In addition to all this there are some beautiful sandy beaches (Figueira da Foz, Sao Martinho do Porto, etc.) As regards the hinterland, which reaches all the way to the Spanish border (Extremadura), it is well worth taking a walk through the region Serra de Estrella where you will find historic villages and ancient Jewish districts such as Gouveia, Guarda (altitude of 1040m), Seia, Manteigas, Covilha.
