The Vendée presents a green and pleasant face to the Atlantic surf, whose action has created an extraordinary expanse of golden sand, now framed by rocky cliffs, now by dunes and pine woods. The light is famously clear and the climate enjoys more hours of sunshine than anywhere in France outside Provence. The Vendée is a patchwork landscape of low hills, little farms and the network of secluded canals of the Marais Poitevin known as the Venise Verte, dotted with abbeys and châteaux whose ‘son et lumière’ recall a grand and turbulent past. On the coast, are fishing villages, lively resorts with safe, sandy beaches perfect for family holidays. The picturesque Ile de Noirmoutier, reached by bridge or causeway at low tide, marks the northern limit of the Vendée. To the south, the resorts of La Tranche, Longeville and Jard sur Mer look towards the whitewashed villages and fortified capital of the famous Ile de Ré and the busy port of La Rochelle whose ancient harbour and elegant, arcaded streets demand a visit.
