Central Dalmatia, with the large town of Split and its surrounding area, is the heart of the country. The coastline and its famous beaches are found there, bordered by the steep mountains. Further into the sea is a string of islands. It is the land of the sun, warm sea, olive groves, wine, fish, songs and the small picturesque towns with their stone houses.
Around Sibenik is the Krka national park (lakes, waterfalls), Sibenik, a very well positioned historical town, has a number of historical sites and monuments. The town of Trogir can be described as a large museum. Few places offer as many historical monuments and buildings in such a small area. Split is the business centre in Dalmatia and the second largest town in Croatia. It is also an important tourist area with its historical monuments and tourist sites, such as the Diocletia monumental palace, which dates back to the 3rd century BC and classed, as a site of historical interest by UNESCO or more recently its elegant sea front. From Split, there are many boat trips available to neighbouring islands.
There are numerous large and small islands off the Dalmatian coast. Each has its own history, natural beauty as well as man made attractions, created over the course of thousands of years. Brac, the largest Dalmatian island is known for its lovely beach as well as its numerous church towers overlooking villages and towns. Hvar is the second largest island in Dalmatia. It is known for its green countryside and its lavender fields but also for its charming old small towns, for example Stari Grad and Hvar. Those people looking for the calming atmosphere of the past will choose the islands of Via and Lastovo, further away.
